Notification of Site Activities – October 2023
Agnico Eagle Mines is pleased to provide an update on our activities in the Kirkland Lake area and the Upper Beaver Project.
Agnico Eagle is a senior Canadian gold mining company with more than 65 years of experience, operating mines in Canada, Australia, Finland, and Mexico and employs more than 16,000 people worldwide.
Agnico Eagle would like to inform you about upcoming work in the Upper Canada and Upper Beaver property areas. Here is an overview of the planned activities:
Upper Beaver Property: The activities described below are anticipated to commence between the end of October and end of November pending certain factors, such as contractor availability and any required authorizations. This work is in preparation for the start up of the Advanced Exploration program in 2024, pending internal approval.
1. Culvert Replacement: Four (4) culverts will be replaced along an existing exploration access on our property to improve the drainage.
2. Soil Investigation: A geotechnical program will be conducted by Agnico Eagle’s consultant with a small (geotechnical) drill. This soil investigation will be done at various locations at the Project site to confirm infrastructure foundation requirements.
3. Vegetation Brushing and Tree Cutting: This activity will be limited to Agnico Eagle’s surface property and will include work along Beaverhouse Road. Work along Beaverhouse Road is being completed to widen the road and straighten sections of the road to improve safety. This work is in preparation of road upgrades anticipated next year to also improve access for the upcoming Advanced Exploration program.
4. Geomechanical Drill Hole: One deep diamond drill hole next to the shaft location will be completed to gather additional information about rock conditions to serve mining design optimization.
5. Draining the existing shaft collar: Agnico Eagle will be pumping storm water accumulated in the shaft collar area to facilitate expected work next year.
Related to the mobilization of necessary equipment to/from site, safety precautions will be in place and any road restrictions will be temporary to minimize inconvenience.
Upper Canada and McBean Properties – Legacy Sites: Agnico Eagle is actively monitoring, investigating, and rehabilitating historical mining sites on its properties. The activities described below are anticipated to commence by the end of October. These activities are part of ongoing closure plan commitments and contribute to our efforts to maintain the highest standards of safety and environmental protection.
1. Installation of Monitoring Wells: Agnico Eagle will install monitoring wells to improve water quality monitoring coverage in the area. These installations require the use of a small (geotechnical) drill.
2. Rock Investigation: Geotechnical program using a drill will also take place at the Upper Canada property in areas where there has been historical underground development. This will allow Agnico Eagle to better assess the long-term stability of the rock and confirm if further work is required.
3. Brushing/Vegetation Clearing: Vegetation clearing will be done around the decant structure of the historical tailings facilities to facilitate regular inspection and maintain efficiency of the structure.
SAVE THE DATE! – We would also like to inform you that we are looking to schedule the next workshop for the evening of Tuesday, November 14th, 2023. The objective of this workshop is to discuss possible alternatives to site infrastructure and location for the Upper Beaver project. These opportunities for open dialogue support Agnico Eagle’s decision-making and are also essential to the preparation of the Impact Statement. Further details will be communicated shortly.
